Behind an unassuming, unmarked facade lies this chic retreat for the rich and fashionable. Deep burgundy walls embellish the bar on the street level, and sleek steel blue glazes the Sisian VIP room downstairs. Despite its namesake, Armenian-American abstract expressionist painter Arshile Gorky, this is no haven for struggling artists. Specialty drinks like the potent Sisian cocktail, made with Armenian cognac and amaretto on ice, and the house martini, Grey Goose dressed up with pomegranate paste, run about $15. Bottle prices reach $1,400.
From 6pm to 10pm, daily happy hour specials include $5 mixed drinks and $100 bottles of vodka in the private rooms, but the minimalist decor makes the space seem cavernous during these unfrequented hours. The atmosphere arrives with the late-night crowd. Hip-hop and dance DJs ignite the downstairs dance scene, and soulful lounge and house music kindles conversation at the bar. |
